The Ryder Cup Matches, one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prize money, span 34 competitions over 77 years. The origin of the idea to stage international matches between the best American professionals and those of Great Britain is a subject of debate among golf historians. Past PGA President George Sargent (1921-26) of the Southeastern PGA Section credited Sylvanus P. Jermain, president of Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, for first presenting the concept in 1921.
In 1979, when the Great Britain & Ireland Team was expanded to include players from European countries, the format was revised to provide four fourball and four foursomes matches the first two days and 12 singles matches on the third day. The total points awarded were 28.

Latest Ryder Cup Rumours And Goings-On
Scottie Scheffler made history as the second man to win the PGA Tour player of the year award three years running. Beating Tiger Woods in this feat, Scheffler won with 91% of player votes after claiming seven titles in the season, including a second Masters championship. Despite comparisons to Woods, Scheffler acknowledges Woods' unique status. Scheffler's standout performance was winning the gold at the Paris Olympics, showing his prowess on the course.
American newcomer Ryggs Johnston triumphed with a final-round 68 to win the men's Australian Open, earning his biggest career win. Former world number one Shin Ji-yai claimed her 65th victory in the women's event played concurrently. Johnston, a rookie who turned pro this year, finished 18 under at Kingston Heath. Shin held off South African Ashleigh Buhai's late surge to finish on 17 under. Johnston will earn an exemption to next year's Open at Royal Portrush.
The TGL golf competition, featuring Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, starts on January 7 after a delay. Woods, who had back surgery last month, will play with his team on January 14. McIlroy joins the competition on January 27. The tournament includes six teams with four players each, playing 15 matches in a round-robin format. The season will conclude with the playoffs starting on March 17. Matches involve 15-hole contests with a unique format.
