El ex Presidente de la PGA George Sargent (1921-26), de la Sección Sureste de la PGA, atribuyó a Sylvanus P. Jermain, presidente del Inverness Club de Toledo, Ohio, la primera presentación del concepto en 1921.

En 1979, cuando el equipo de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda se amplió para incluir a jugadores de países europeos, el formato se revisó para ofrecer cuatro partidos de fourball y cuatro de foursomes los dos primeros días y 12 partidos individuales el tercer día. El total de puntos concedidos fue de 28.
