Manchester United
Manchester United Football Club is an English Premiership football club, based at Old Trafford in Manchester. The club is one of the most successful clubs in England, having won the FA Premier League/Football League twenty times, FA Cup eleven times and the European Cup/UEFA Champions League three. Manchester United has had the highest average attendance in English football for the majority of the past seventeen seasons!
Man Utd’s greatest period of success came in the 1990s and early 2000s, when Sir Alex Ferguson guided them to eight league championships in eleven years. In 1999, Man Utd became the first team to win the FA Premier League, the FA Cup and the European Cup in the same season – a record that has still not been equalled. The club had been run as a Public Limited Company since 1991, and a takeover was a real possibility. An attempted takeover by Rupert Murdoch had been blocked by the British Government in 1999, but in 2005 Malcolm Glazer completed a hostile takeover of the club, despite considerable protests from many of Manchester United’s supporters. In protest
a group of break away supporters formed FC United Of Manchester (or FCUM for short). However as much as the atmosphere at Old Trafford has changed Manchester United under the Glazers have continued to go from strength to strength winning the Premier League title on many occasions, Manchester United have overtaken Liverpool in all time top tier titles, something that really annoys Liverpool fans!
Manchester United once again lifted the title in 2013 (after losing in the final seconds to City the season before), a team that many Man Utd fans thought was no where near as good as previous teams built by Sir Alex was far too strong for their competitors and ran away with it from Christmas onwards. The 2013/2014 season was a totally different affair with the whole
atmosphere around Old Trafford changed. Sir Alex Ferguson had gone and David Moyes had the job of steering the biggest club in English football. Not only that but an almost full clear out of backroom staff caused major disruption to the Manchester United machine. Combine that with unsettled players and the 2013/14 season
was little more than a disaster for Manchester United. One thing that was for certain and that was that David Moyes would be given time to establish himself at Old Trafford…or so the Old Trafford faithful thought. As it turned out the season was far worse than anybody expected and saw David Moyes lose his job before the season ended. Now with Luis Van Gaal in charge and having spent £150 million on new players (this in itself tells you how bad the
playing situation was) Champions League qualification was a must. It was touch and go for a while but LVGs tactics against the big teams secured enough points for United to return to the Champions League. This was followed by a FA Cup in the 2015/16 season but a disaster in the Premier League meant that LVG lost his job. Manchester United had gone from being the
most stable team in English football under SAF to a laughing stock of revolving managers and under performing highly paid stars. Then in 2016/17 the Jose Mourinho era started. Major changers to the squad were made as heavy investment was made once again. Despite a injury plagued season that saw them finish no higher in the Premier League a route back to the Champions League was secured
by lifting the Europa League trophy for the first time in the clubs history.
Whilst watching from home is great, there is nothing you can do to beat the atmosphere of a live football game, Manchester United tickets are renowned as being hard to get but if you are lucky you might be able to buy some from this official Manchester United tickets exchange website.
