Lyon Football Club, commonly known as Lyon, is a French association football club based in Lyon. The club was founded in 1950 and currently plays in Ligue 1, the top tier of French football. The club’s greatest domestic success came in 2011 when it won the Coupe de France defeating Bordeaux in the final. The club was formed as Lyon Olympique Universitaire in 1899, according to many supporters and sport historians, but was nationally established as a club in 1950. The club’s most successful period has been the 21st century. The club plays its home matches at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Décines-Charpieu, a suburb of Lyon.
Lyon has remained at the highest level of French football for more than half-a-century, something not to be sniffed at although their forays in to European football have been few and far between.
