En 1979, lorsque l'équipe de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande a été élargie pour inclure des joueurs de pays européens, le format a été révisé pour offrir quatre matchs de fourball et quatre matchs de foursomes les deux premiers jours et 12 matchs de simple le troisième jour.
