O antigo Presidente da PGA, George Sargent (1921-26), da Secção Sudeste da PGA, atribuiu a Sylvanus P. Jermain, presidente do Inverness Club em Toledo, Ohio, a apresentação do conceito em 1921.
Em 1979, quando a equipa da Grã-Bretanha e da Irlanda foi alargada para incluir jogadores de países europeus, o formato foi revisto para oferecer quatro jogos de fourball e quatro de foursomes nos primeiros dois dias e 12 jogos de singulares no terceiro dia. O total de pontos atribuídos foi de 28.
