In modern times there’s very few countries that don’t have a major horse racing event that captures the imagination of the general population. Some of the most famous horse races and events include the Grand National, The Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Royal Ascot, The Irish Grand National, Dubai World Cup and the Melbourne Cup. Of course there are many more, that’s just a list of the top of my head.

Horse Racing has always been synonymous with gambling and it’s the gambling that has driven horse racing over the years. Besides those really well known races there are dozens of horse races all over the world every day. The 3 Most Important Horse Races In The UK

The Grand National

In terms of prize money, the Grand National is the most valuable National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom. Run over a distance of 4 miles 856 yards, covering 2 circuits of the Aintree National Racecourse, it was founded by William Philip Molyneux, who owned the land at Aintree in Liverpool, and while there is some matter of historical debate as to when the first Grand National Race was actually run, opinion has settled for 1836 although the years 1836-1838 do not appear in the record books because the races run in 1837 and 1838 were originally believed to have taken place elsewhere.

Several notable occurrences took place in 1839 that contributed to this race being seen in a more nationally important light. The Great Saint Alban’s Chase which had previously taken place on a date that clashed with the Aintree meeting, was not renewed after 1838 leaving a date in the horse racing calendar that needed to be filled. At that time the national railways arrived in Liverpool, making transportation and logistics that much easier to arrange and allowing travel to and from meetings across the country, and a committee was formed that year to better organize and promote racing at Aintree. With the advent of national attention and publicity, the race quickly attracted a larger field of quality horses and riders, and media attention encouraged larger numbers to attend. Therefore, 1839 became the first official Grand National.

Today this race is incredibly popular amongst those who might never otherwise place a bet on any other sporting event, and it has built up a reputation for excitement and danger that has been immortalized in the films ‘National Velvet’ and ‘Champions’. Legendary names go hand in hand with the history of the Grand National, none more so than Red Rum, the only horse ever to have won the race 3 times. Upon his death, the great beast was laid to rest beside the finishing post at Aintree.

There have been more than fifty equine fatalities in the history of the Grand National, four of them taking place in 1954, and each year it generates controversy as well as discussion. With it’s infamous series of severe fences that include Becher’s Brook and The Chair, this is a race that tests even the finest of jockeys and there are many famous riders for whom winning has proven elusive.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup

This esteemed Blue Riband event is run on the racecourse at Cheltenham in the United Kingdom during the annual Cheltenham Festival in March. As the most valuable non-handicap race in the country, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is considered to be the most prestigious of the Nation Hunt calendar. It covers 3 miles, 2 1/2 furlongs over 22 fences.

It was originally known as a flat race when the first event took place in 1819 at a site which currently overlooks the current racecourse. However, in 1924 it took place with jumps at what is currently known as the ‘Old Course’, but it was overshadowed at that time by other events at the Cheltenham Festival. Golden Miller, who also won the Grand National in 1934, was the most successful winning horse in the history of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, taking five prizes in a row between 1932 and 1936.

In 1959 the race was moved to the ‘New Course’ and there it has remained. Perhaps the most famous name associated with the Cheltenham Gold Cup is that of Arkle, the horse who won three time consecutively in 1964, 1965 and 1966. So astonishing was his superiority seen to be, that he became the shortest priced winner in the history of the race at 1/10, which meant that a winning bet of ?10 would only have won ?1. The longest ever winning price was 100/1 on Gold Coin in 1990.

The biggest achievement associated with the Cheltenham Gold Cup belongs to trainer Michael Dickinson in 1983, who was proud to have not just trained the winner but the other four horse who followed behind as second, third, fourth and fifth!

Sadly the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the entire Cheltenham Festival had to be cancelled in 2001 because of the restrictions in place due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. It was replaced with the Gold Trophy Chase later in the year at Sandown but it was lacking in the aura that the Cheltenham Gold Cup typically generates.

The Epsom Derby

Known internationally as the Epsom Derby but more colloquially as The Derby or The Derby Stakes, this a flat race run over 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards. It takes place at Epsom Downs every year on the first Saturday in June and it is the biggest, richest horse race in the United Kingdom. Previous winners have in recent years earned prizes of up ?700,000.00 and the value of Aurhorized, the 2007 shot up to an incredibly ?10 million in stud fees.

The Epsom Derby first took place on May 4th 1780 and was named for the honor of the man hosting the party at which the initial idea for the race was conceived, Edward Smith-Stanley the 12th Earl of Derby, although he himself did not achieve success with one of his own horses until 1787. Since first taking taking its place in the horse racing calendar, The Derby has become an undoubted inspiration for a great many other horse races around the world including the Irish Derby, the well known Kentucky Derby, the Victoria Derby and the Prix du Jockey Club (The French Derby).

Trial races for horses considered most likely to compete, are run during April and May, and this has proven to be highly successful in demonstrating potential winners for future years.

Many famous names are associated with the long and illustrious history of the Epsom Derby, most noted of all being the jockey Lester Piggott who rode no less than 9 winners in his career between the years 1954 and 1983. Amongst trainers it is necessary to go back long into the past glories of the race to find those who have 7 wins to their name, amongst them Robert Robson, John Porter, and most recently Fred Darling with his last winner Owen Tudor in 1941. But when it comes to horses who have won this most illustrious of races, the name Shergar will always stand out, not only for his extraordinary record 10 length winning margin in 1981, but for his infamous kidnapping from the Irish Ballymany Stud in County Kildare, at the hands of masked gunmen in 1983. He was never found.

The course over which the Epsom Derby is run, is in itself quite unique. Filled with twists, turns, falls and rises along its entire length, it is considered to be the ultimate test of both racehorse stamina and jockeying skill. Whilst for those who come to watch the spectacle, it is world renowned for eloquently displaying all layers of social class gathering together, and it generates a party atmosphere that other racing venues are certainly hard pressed to emulate.
