Les matchs de la Ryder Cup, l'un des derniers grands événements sportifs fondés sur le prestige plutôt que sur l'argent, ont donné lieu à 34 compétitions en 77 ans. L'origine de l'idée d'organiser des matchs internationaux entre les meilleurs professionnels américains et ceux de Grande-Bretagne fait l'objet d'un débat parmi les historiens du golf. L'ancien président de la PGA, George Sargent (1921-26), de la section sud-est de la PGA, attribue à Sylvanus P. Jermain, président de l'Inverness Club à Toledo, Ohio, le mérite d'avoir présenté le concept pour la première fois en 1921.
En 1979, lorsque l'équipe de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande a été élargie pour inclure des joueurs de pays européens, le format a été révisé pour offrir quatre matchs de fourball et quatre matchs de foursomes les deux premiers jours et 12 matchs de simple le troisième jour. Le total des points attribués était de 28.

Brandon Robinson-Thompson set a course record of 61 in the first round of the Bahrain Championship, leading by three shots. Despite a bogey at the last hole, he was pleased with his performance amidst challenging weather conditions. He narrowly missed equaling a tour record with eight birdies and two eagles. His career-best round left him eager for future success with his new caddy, while fellow Englishman Callum Tarren trailed in second place.
