Der frühere PGA-Präsident George Sargent (1921-26) von der Southeastern PGA Section schrieb Sylvanus P. Jermain, dem Präsidenten des Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, zu, dass er das Konzept im Jahr 1921 erstmals vorgestellt habe.
1979, als das Team Großbritannien und Irland um Spieler aus europäischen Ländern erweitert wurde, wurde das Format dahingehend geändert, dass an den ersten beiden Tagen vier Vierball- und vier Vierer-Matches und am dritten Tag 12 Einzelspiele ausgetragen wurden.
