Zápasy Ryder Cupu, jedné z posledních velkých sportovních událostí založených spíše na prestiži než na peněžních výhrách, se konají již 34 let. Vznik myšlenky pořádat mezinárodní zápasy mezi nejlepšími americkými profesionály a profesionály z Velké Británie je předmětem debat golfových historiků. Bývalý prezident PGA George Sargent (1921-26) z jihovýchodní sekce PGA připsal Sylvanusovi P. Jermainovi, prezidentovi klubu Inverness v Toledu v Ohiu, zásluhu na tom, že v roce 1921 poprvé představil tuto myšlenku.
V roce 1979, kdy byl tým Velké Británie a Irska rozšířen o hráče z evropských zemí, byl formát turnaje upraven tak, aby první dva dny probíhaly čtyři zápasy ve čtyřhře a čtyři zápasy ve čtyřhře a třetí den 12 zápasů ve dvouhře. Celkem se udělovalo 28 bodů.

Despite a bogey at the last hole, he was pleased with his performance amidst challenging weather conditions. He narrowly missed equaling a tour record with eight birdies and two eagles. His career-best round left him eager for future success with his new caddy, while fellow Englishman Callum Tarren trailed in second place.
