Os jogos da Ryder Cup, um dos últimos grandes eventos desportivos baseados no prestígio e não no prémio em dinheiro, abrangem 34 competições ao longo de 77 anos. A origem da ideia de organizar jogos internacionais entre os melhores profissionais americanos e os da Grã-Bretanha é objeto de debate entre os historiadores do golfe. O antigo Presidente da PGA, George Sargent (1921-26), da Secção Sudeste da PGA, atribuiu a Sylvanus P. Jermain, presidente do Inverness Club em Toledo, Ohio, a apresentação do conceito em 1921.
Em 1979, quando a equipa da Grã-Bretanha e da Irlanda foi alargada para incluir jogadores de países europeus, o formato foi revisto para oferecer quatro jogos de fourball e quatro de foursomes nos primeiros dois dias e 12 jogos de singulares no terceiro dia. O total de pontos atribuídos foi de 28.
