De UEFA Champions League is een jaarlijkse clubvoetbalcompetitie georganiseerd door de Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) voor de meest succesvolle voetbalclubs in Europa. Het is een van de meest prestigieuze clubtrofeeën in het voetbal, mogelijk de meeste op clubniveau. Het heeft een wereldwijd publiek van meer dan 1 miljard mensen (groter dan de SuperBowl)
Het toernooi werd in het seizoen 1955-1956 ingehuldigd als een competitie voor winnaars van de Europese nationale voetbalcompetities onder de naam Europa Cup, maar sinds het seizoen 1992-1993 zijn de deelnemende teams de hoogst gerangschikte teams van Europa en de toernooi is omgedoopt tot de Champions League, al moet de UEFA Champions League niet worden verward met de UEFA Cup, de op een na belangrijkste competitie voor Europese clubteams. Door de overstap van een standaard bekerformaat naar een op competities gebaseerd systeem is het aantal wedstrijden dat elk team speelt toegenomen, waardoor ook de mogelijkheden voor tv-verslaggeving aanzienlijk zijn toegenomen.
Het is mogelijk om bekijk de Champions League via internet in bepaalde delen van Groot-Brittannië. BT Sports heeft nu de exclusieve rechten op alle Champions League-wedstrijden, wat geweldig is als u een BT-breedbandklant bent, maar er zijn veel delen van de Britse eilanden waar deze optie niet bestaat. Hun enige manier om naar Champions League-voetbal te kijken is door te betalen voor een BT Sports-pakket bovenop een Sky-pakket, die beide geen aanbiedingen hebben voor afgelegen gebieden van Groot-Brittannië. Door deze rechten aan BT Sport te verkopen, zijn bepaalde delen van Groot-Brittannië bijna volledig vervreemd van de mogelijkheid om naar Europees clubvoetbal te kijken, vandaar de steeds groeiende populariteit van alternatieve streamingbronnen.
