ライダーカップは、賞金よりも名声に根ざした最後の偉大なスポーツイベントのひとつであり、77年間で34回開催されている。アメリカの一流プロとイギリスの一流プロが国際試合を行うというアイデアの起源は、ゴルフ史家の間で議論の的となっている。南東部PGA支部のジョージ・サージェント元会長（1921～26年）は、オハイオ州トレドのインバネス・クラブ会長シルバヌス・P・ジャーメインが1921年に初めてこの構想を発表したと信じている。
1979年、グレート・ブリテン＆アイルランド・チームにヨーロッパ諸国の選手が加わることになったのを機に、フォーマットが変更され、初日と2日目に4ボール4試合とフォアサム4試合、3日目にシングルス12試合が行われることになった。獲得ポイントは28ポイントだった。
